Midsummer is an ancient tradition that was first celebrated by the pagans and continues through to this day, especially in Europe. In the UK Midsummer bonfires are still held. It is a celebration of fertility and some pants are purported to possess magical properties and are picked during Midsummer festivities. Each culture has its own tradition around the world for celebrating this day. Although a pagan holiday it was also adopted by Christians in celebrating the birth of John the Baptist. Modern rituals have less of a religious flair to them and more a celebratory on simply to honour the event. Although not everyone can build a bonfire in their back yard to celebrate Midsummer, launching flying lanterns into the sky is a great substitute.

Midsummer feasting is held throughout the evening and day from dusk until dark. Having friends over, eating food and enjoying one another’s company, having a few drinks and celebrating the day is the perfect way to celebrate this event. End the day with a grand launch of flying lanterns to really make an impact on the day. If everyone in attendance launches one flying lanterns, the sky will be ablaze with the glow from the lanterns. Unlike bonfires that can only be seen a limited distance, the flying lanterns drift into the sky and can be seen for many kilometres.

If your neighbours also launch flying lanterns for their Midsummer celebrations you can have a wondrous display in the night sky. Midsummer is a time to revel and what better way to do that then with a gathering of people and a launching of flying lanterns? You can choose any one of several types of sky lantern. If you really want to make an impact, though, choose the giant sly lanterns found at http://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/sky-lanterns/2-x-giant-lanterns/prod_29.html?_a=viewProd&productId=28. This will take two people to launch because it is so tall at 205 cm! But it will really show up in the night sky.

But another popular flying lantern to use during Midsummer is a novelty lantern. You can choose heart shaped ones or smiley faces. Since Midsummer coincides with the World Cup, you may even want to use the football lanterns found athttp://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/novelty-sky-lanterns/football-sky-lanterns/prod_26.html for the celebration. They can help you celebrate Midsummer plus you can also work in a World Cup theme to the occasion, something everyone will also enjoy.

When launching flying lanterns, make sure to adhere to all safety precautions and if children are in attendance, make sure they are completely supervised. Once you have all the flying lanterns lit and release them, it is a perfect opportunity to take pictures of the grand occasion. If you do, make sure to send them in so we can feature them on your gallery and give other people ideas on how to use flying lanterns. Flying lanterns are the ideal way to help celebrate Midsummer. In keeping with the tradition of bonfires, instead of an unsafe bonfire in the yard, consider using flying lanterns so you have several smaller “bonfires” lighting up the sky.

The final step is to light the fuel cell. As you light it and the air fills the lantern it will expand and be ready for launch. As you release it, the Paper Hanging Lanterns will drift into the night sky and create a stunning visual effect that can be seem for many kilometres. The more you release, the more dramatic the vision. Make sure to take pictures and send them in so we can see how you used the sky lanterns.
