Yesterday began the world famous Tour de France for the first leg of the race. It continues on today through the 25th. This is the 97th tour de France since it began and this race will consist of one prologue, twenty stages and will cover over 3,500 kilometres. There are nine flat stages, 6 mountain stages with summit finishes, four medium mountain stages, and one individual time trial. American Lance Armstrong who won the Tour de France a record breaking seven consecutive years tweeted that this would be his last Tour de France. The UK based Team Sky had an impressive finish in the prologue for a hopeful start to this year’s race. England residents should support Team Sky by launching sky lanterns.

For the Tour de France sky lanterns can be renamed Team Sky Lanterns and be used during each leg of the race to show your support to the team. Currently, Team Sky has two riders in the top ten, Geraint Thomas and Edvald Boasson Hagen. Keep the momentum going by encouraging Team Sky with sky lanterns launched in their honour. There are several ways this can be done. Today, in honour of the team, customize sky lanterns with the team player’s names and launch them into the sky. You can use white traditional sky lanterns such as those found athttp://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/sky-lanterns/white-traditional-sky-lanterns/prod_8.html and use a sharpie marker to write the names of Team Sky on them.

When this is done, you can light the fuel cell and release it into the sky. Or, you can even use Package five of the coloured sky lantern packs to write each team member’s name individually on a sky lantern. They can be found athttp://www.nightskylanterns.co.uk/lantern-packs/coloured-lantern-packages/prod_18.html. After all 26 names are listed on each sky lantern you can then light and release them one at a time for an incredible display in the night sky in support of Team Sky. You will even have a few sky lanterns left over to use throughout the remainder of the Tour de France.

In years past, sky lanterns were used to honour people, celebrate and send prayers to the heavens. You can continue this tradition by using sky lanterns to honour those riders competing in this month’s Tour de France. With so many stages and exciting changes in standing throughout the course of the race, there are sure to be plenty of opportunities to celebrate Team Sky’s accomplishments and to wish Team Sky best of luck during each phase of the race. Current standings after the Prologue have UK’s Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas in fifth place immediately following American Lance Armstrong who is in fourth.

It is still early though and while first through third belong to Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin and David Millar it is still early enough to unseat them with the skill of the UK team along with encouragement from fans. What better way to send encouragement to Team Sky than with Team Sky Lanterns?
